The animated film Lost Family combines archival materials, photo collages, and audio narratives. The stories of three narrators converge on a map to form a single visual narrative, revealing unexpected connections between the lives of people from distant parts of the world. Passed down through oral storytelling, complex family histories often lose important details over time, gradually transforming into mythical accounts far removed from reality. These microhistories connect people of diverse backgrounds and nationalities while at the same time becoming sources of inherited conflicts, disputes, and systems of domination. The way these stories are told – and the intentions behind them – remain in the hands of the narrators, whereas their critical interpretation belongs to the listeners. Through Lost Family, the artist proposes an alternative source of collective memory.
